Handpan Practice for Beginners: Listen, Slow Down and Loop
Choose one or two bars you can remember, listen before playing, then slow the playback and use a count-in. Repeat that short phrase before adding more. TideTone plays the score; your own listening checks how you play on a physical handpan.
Hear the same phrase at 90 and 60 BPM
Listen to A3, C4, a beat with no new attack, then A3. The recording shows how to pause, lower the tempo and enable a four-beat count-in before replaying.
Prepare one short phrase
Choose a score with one or two bars instead of starting with a whole arrangement. In TideTone, review the notes and rests once, then set a tempo slow enough that every event has space. The aim is to recognize the pattern before speed becomes part of the task. If a bar contains a silence, count it as deliberately as a played note.
Use the countdown to start together
Set the tempo, begin playback, and use the count-in to settle into the beat before the first note. During playback, TideTone shows the current bar and the next bar beside the handpan. Look ahead only far enough to prepare the next movement; returning your attention to the current bar helps keep a repeated phrase steady.
Raise speed only after verification
Play the same passage several times at one tempo. If the rhythm breaks, lower the tempo and identify the exact transition: a note change, a rest, or a bar boundary. When you can complete the phrase with consistent timing, increase the setting in a small step. This gives you an observable reason for each change instead of guessing whether faster was better.
Finish with a usable note
Before you finish, note the tempo that felt comfortable and one transition to revisit: a note change, a rest or a bar boundary. Begin your next session there, including the preceding bar for context.
If the score itself needs a correction, edit its pitches, durations or rests and listen again before playing along.

Try stopping playback and recalling the phrase by humming or tapping it. If you lose the pattern, listen again. If you remember it but cannot follow on your instrument, reduce the tempo or work on one transition.
TideTone provides playback and visual cues; this workflow does not automatically grade your physical playing. Match your instrument by pitch names rather than assuming its position numbers match the app.
