How to record handpan on a phone: compare three short takes

Try the phone you already own before buying a microphone. Comparable positions, surroundings and playing make differences easier to hear.

An original comparison exercise, not a universal optimal distance. Phones, rooms and playing levels differ.

How do I make the first take?

Find a quieter spot and support the phone securely, away from the vibrating instrument. Leave microphones unobstructed. Record a familiar phrase for a few seconds and check that sound was captured. Keep an original before adding effects.

How far away should it be?

There is no centimetre answer for every phone. Start outside your hand movement and compare A, B and C with similar playing. Distance and angle affect the balance of direct sound, room sound and tone. Professional microphone guidance supports experimenting with placement, not transferring model-specific settings to a phone.[4]

Why is the recording harsh or distorted?

Check whether the issue exists only in the recording. Lower input level if the app permits or move the phone slightly farther away. A clipping indicator matters, but its absence does not prove a clean recording. Lower playback volume cannot restore an already distorted signal.

Why does the level pump or the tail vanish?

Automatic gain, noise processing, surrounding noise or the playing itself may contribute. If controls exist, compare enhancement settings one at a time. Use the same headphones and playback level so listening differences do not masquerade as instrument changes.

Should I add reverb?

Keep an unenhanced copy first, then try effects for the space you want. Reverb is a creative choice, not evidence of the instrument’s natural sustain or tuning. For troubleshooting, provide a recording without added beautification.

When should I buy equipment?

First identify a concrete limitation: background noise, input control or stable positioning. Save a position and setting you like for next time. Recording polish is not a qualification you must earn before enjoying music.

How do I choose a take after recording all three?

Use the same headphones and similar playback levels. First check whether each attack is distinguishable, then whether both low and high notes are audible, and finally how the tail remains after you stop. Do not simply choose the loudest take. If A makes the note order clear, B obscures the ending with room sound and C weakens one low note, keep A and note its position. This is a choice for this recording, not an instrument rating.

What do I do with the recording next?

Keep the complete original and select one phrase you want to revisit. Use a name such as “date—after rain—last three notes” and give the TideTone draft a matching cue. Listen for two or three pitches you can identify, then enter them manually. The audio remains in your recording tool: saving a score does not back up that audio file.
